It’s not often that I stumble across new bands from New Orleans. I’m not sure why that is. I’m certainly not avoiding the state. I never realized that was even the case until I began investigating Empress Hotel.
The Big Easy masters of melodic pop have successfully broadened my perception of the sounds that could emerge from the state. Their catchy confections have a carefree sway that one might associate with the South, but on the whole feels more modest. Rock guitars carry sunny harmonies laced with falsetto and elevated by twinkling keyboard flourishes. I recommend checking it out now, but be prepared to give it a spin this Spring, their music is more May than October.
Released last February, their self-titled debut EP can be heard on their Bandcamp page, and purchased on iTunes for $5.00
