Neat Tracks / High Highs “Horses”

When I first caught the High Highs at SXSW 2011, I wasn’t sure what to make of them. Their music is the accompaniment of a chilly winter evening.  It doesn’t reach out for connection, in fact, the haunting, distant vocals and melancholy lyrics seem to push the listener away. This sacred stillness, however, is what makes the High Highs so utterly compelling.

Neat Tracks / NewVillager “Lighthouse”

It’s not often that a music video grabs my attention. And by that I mean it’s not often I actually make an effort to watch music videos. I’m not even sure why I watched the video for “Lighthouse” – likely something to do with shiny objects or pretty colors. And boy does this video have both.

Neat Tracks / The Kills “Nail In My Coffin”

I have wanted to write about this track – this album – since I first got an advance copy (humblebrag, sorry) just before I caught the band at SXSW this past year.  At the time the only song off Blood Pressures that bloggers were allowed to disseminate was “DNA.”  The full album was released on April 5, 2011.  How the heck did it become September already?

Neat Tracks / Milo Greene “1957”

It’s been my sincere pleasure to hear the buzz about this local band get louder and louder over the past few months.  From my perspective at least, it began with the word spreading about their fantastic live performances.  Then came write-ups in blogs across the country from Sunset in the Rearview to the LA times.  Just a few short months later Milo Greene was featured as part of the “I Also Like To Rock” series, presented by KCRW and curated by Buzz Bands LA.  Most recently they were on the bill to play at Sunset Junction, and due to the festival’s cancellation, played a packed day party at Dangerbird Records.
