Back in elementary school, seeing a classmate reading a Shel Silverstein book was as prevalent as seeing yet another artist covering Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep” is these days. The massiveness of Where the Sidewalk Ends will forever live in our hearts and I’ll personally always remember the 42-year late library book from A Light in the Attic’s poem “Overdue.” But The Giving Tree stands alone – its ambiguity only becoming apparent when read many years later.

When I set out to select a book for this month’s mixtape I was faced with a dilemma – my love of non-fiction stories was about to go head-on with my need for the lush lyrical landscapes that only fiction could provide for a good music mix…or so I thought. At the suggestion of my sister, I decided to take on the challenge and read Tina Fey’s recent release, Bossypants.

This month I decided to take Tadpole Audio’s tagline (“Where music and story meet. And hang out for a while”) in the most literal sense. I revived and updated a mixtape I did a few years ago for a music exchange group I was in with some friends. My contribution to the group was to music supervise a book – The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I defy you to find a scarier children’s book than Roald Dahl’s The Witches. It’s not out there. So I guess it’s fitting that the primary emotion I felt when I embarked upon putting this mix together was fear. And I thought Peter Pan was a tough one.Get to the good stuff after the jump »

June 9th, 2010Mixtapes, Music By The BookAnyone who knows me knows that I have an embarrassingly deep love for
all things Peter Pan. When I was little I only wore floral, frilly nightgowns and kept my slippers next to the bed at all times just so I would always be prepared if Peter came one to whisk me away. No matter how old I get I will always ride “Peter Pan’s Flight” at Disney, and will cry at any movie with the general theme of growing up / loss of childhood innocence. And I mean CRY.Get to the good stuff after the jump »
