Awards season is officially in full swing. Some big ones are behind us, but the big one is still ahead. It seemed like as good a time as any to take stock of where things stand for the film and television music communities (but mostly film).

It seems as though the 54th Annual Grammy Awards have received more flak from the indie community this year than any other year (in my memory at least). Weren’t we all over “Grenade” by last February? Didn’t Mumford and Sons Sigh No More come out in 2009? Bon Iver for Best New Artist? For Emma, Forever Ago was released in 2008. And if the music community scoffed (mostly) anonymously into the social media ether, Justin Vernon made his reaction public.
To be honest, the music in media categories feel similar. Burlesque, Tangled and The King’s Speech all received nods during awards season last winter. The public has moved on. After this though, the only major awards show left is the Oscars, which has already caused discomfort in the music supervision world for only nominating two songs and then not inviting either to perform.
Now that the holidays are over, and with them all that “peace on earth and goodwill towards men” nonsense, it’s that magical time of year again when judging people is not only acceptable – it’s glorified. That’s right folks, it’s awards season. Which means for the next few months we all turn into Statler & Waldorf and every website/blog/TV show/magazine will feature the current crop of Hollywood darlings, leaping on every word and unflattering dress (or suit), debating how worthy they are for each and every nomination.
Often times at these shindigs, the music segment is overlooked – not everyone immediately thinks, “Ooh, that cue was so complex!” or stays for the more than five seconds of the end credit song – so here’s a little spotlight on what’s being voted on this weekend at the 68th Annual Golden Globes:
