The holidays are a time of friendly gatherings, a time of joy, a time of cheer, blah blah blah…but, have you ever had one of those kinds of Christmases or holidays? There’s so much storytelling surrounding these traditional celebrations, but what if you don’t feel much like celebrating? There’s a story there too.
There was no question, we were GOING to see fireworks on the 4th of July.
It was 8:45pm on Sunday, and 10 of us were sprawled around my boyfriend’s living room having just finished Wet Hot American Summer. We had been drinking, eating and generally making merry since 2pm and were all in various states of food coma/nap. Only one thing would get us all mobilized, even at the very last minute: fireworks. There was no real decision made to go, it just was – a mad dash to all settle on a place, piling into cars and then in just 15 minutes or so we were there. Even with 5 cars – some coming from other directions – we managed to find each other atop a winding hill in some park off Duquesne with much of the population of Culver City.
With the long weekend fast approaching my mind has been entirely focused on the impending vacation and the fact that in just a few days I will be sitting by a pool in Las Vegas, preferably with a cold beer in hand and reading a girly magazine.
Which means that it’s only a matter of time until I will be enjoying the same accoutrements lounging by the ocean instead. Feeling the warm sand under my toes, listening to the waves crashing against the shore, napping AND tanning simultaneously…aw crap, I got phones to answer.
Look around the next time you go to the gym – from the beefy dude hitting the bench press to the soccer mom pounding the treadmill, who doesn’t have an iPod? This week its all about work out tunes, starting with my favorite place to dig on some cool tunes – yoga. What strengthens your warrior one and chills out your savasana?
