Guest Mixtape + Interview / Mystery Claws / Summer Lovin’ : BBQ Days

If you’re an LA denizen and you haven’t heard of Mystery Claws, you will soon. Comprised of rockers Julia Bembenek and Matt Kivel (Princeton) and featuring drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), the band’s first single, “Flashlights” premiered on Stereogum late April and now their debut album Hydaspia (on Easter Everywhere Records) is on the market.

In the spirit of the season, band member Julia Bembenek was kind enough to throw together a BBQ mixtape for Tadpole Audio. I grabbed a meal with her a few days before their kickin’ record release party this past weekend at Pehrspace to chat about it…

Roshambo: Knife Would Have Been Scarier Than Scissors

Big surprise: there are not very many songs about scissors.  I was amazed to be able to find two and if you know of others please send them to me to prove me wrong.  However I was inspired by this crazy/haunting/compelling video:

AHHHH I KNOW RIGHT?  I am creeped out.  Thankfully, I have a (mostly) lively playlist to make the impending doom go away.

Samantha Crain will be performing with Swedish band First Aid Kit and Kenneth Pattengale at the Bootleg on June 1st.  Tickets here.

And Born Ruffians can be caught at the Echo on June 3 with Young Rival.  Details here.

Lastly, yes I am aware I technically used the same song twice.

Coachella 2010: If You Can’t Stand The Heat…Don’t Go To The Desert

One of the most defining characteristics about Coachella is that it takes place in the desert.  There is absolutely no shade, save for what’s created by tents or various giant sculptures, so the sun beats down hard, making the already hot climate almost unbearable.  Loose, light clothing is uniform and the key accessories that will save your trip are a water bottle, sunblock and chapstick (I promise you one of the worst parts of your body to get sunburned are your lips).

For some great tips and logistics in a nutshell, check out KROQ “Locals Only” DJ Kat Corbett’s Web In Front piece this week “Surviving Coachella”

And Classical Geek Theatre’s “Coachella Survival Tips!”

The weather also plays a big role in setting the tone of the festival – warm, lazy, relaxed and a bit sweaty.  Just like the tunes below.
