Well, it’s appears that summer came early this year (or is generally always hanging around, if you live in Los Angeles like I do). Moments later I found out that I could, in fact, share this infectious tune with all of you. And the same statement I made then still holds true today. (more…)
I am a goat – at least according to Chinese mythology. Like most goats, I am stubborn and have a cast iron stomach. Sadly I didn’t inherit any nimbleness, but in celebration of my goaty-ness and the dog days of summer, I present to you lemon Goat Cheese Ice Cream.
Yeah, that’s right, I said Goat Cheese Ice Cream. It’s like cheesecake but with a deeper tanginess. (more…)
If the fact that my last mixtape included tracks from both Journey AND The Backstreet Boys didn’t reveal me to be a huge nerd, then I’m about to blow my cover now: this past April I actually left my apartment in Silverlake – Los Angeles hipster music mecca – and moved completely across town into a house a mile away from the beach. AND I LOVE IT. Yeah, it’s much farther to get to most shows, and a much more painful drive home when I head east on weeknights, but I moved to be closer to my job in Santa Monica and in that regard it’s a total win.
I also love living in a house. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two floors. I love my huge living room and kitchen. I love having a front yard. I love my tiny room, which is almost completely become my own personal magical music happy land. Currently though, I’m especially loving my back patio. I want to paint the walls. I want to buy cute vintage patio furniture. And I want to garden.
If you’re an LA denizen and you haven’t heard of Mystery Claws, you will soon. Comprised of rockers Julia Bembenek and Matt Kivel (Princeton) and featuring drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), the band’s first single, “Flashlights” premiered on Stereogum late April and now their debut album Hydaspia (on Easter Everywhere Records) is on the market.
In the spirit of the season, band member Julia Bembenek was kind enough to throw together a BBQ mixtape for Tadpole Audio. I grabbed a meal with her a few days before their kickin’ record release party this past weekend at Pehrspace to chat about it…
Most of my favorite summers were spent away as summer camp. Singing dorky camp songs. Canoeing. Capture the flag. That one summer where I spent four weeks doing manual labor and it was called a “learning experience.” The best times were always had in the evenings. It was great to be able to see the stars and there’s something incredibly bonding about being in the middle of the woods at night. Campfires happened at night. Ghost stories. Fireflies. Bonding chats. Listening to your cabin-mates’ hilarious sleep talking.
